Dear Reader,

Today I look at the reality of why Protestant foundation ideas have no biblical basis. In fact Protestantism at the core of it goes directly against solid biblical principles.

The New Testament and the Question of Denominations

The Bible never gives individual Christians the authority to establish separate churches that teach doctrines contrary to those handed down by Jesus Christ and His Apostles. On the contrary, the New Testament repeatedly condemns division within the Church, warns against altering apostolic doctrine, and commands believers to preserve the unity of the faith.

The Command for Doctrinal Unity

Scripture consistently presents Christ’s Church as one visible body united in faith.

Ephesians 4:4–5 declares:

“There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Likewise, 1 Corinthians 1:10 records Paul’s appeal:

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another... that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Jesus Himself prayed for this unity shortly before His Passion:

John 17:20–21

“That they may all be one... so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

The New Testament therefore presents unity not as an optional ideal, but as a defining characteristic of Christ’s Church.

Warnings Against Altering Apostolic Doctrine

The Apostles also issued some of Scripture’s strongest warnings against changing the faith they had received.

Galatians 1:8

“Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.”

2 John 9

“Anyone who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God.”

Jude 3

Believers are instructed to:

“Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

The expression “once for all” emphasizes that the apostolic deposit of faith was delivered definitively rather than being subject to later revision or replacement.

Paul also foretold a time when many would abandon sound doctrine:

2 Timothy 4:3–4

“The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching... but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”

How Different Christian Traditions Explain Their Existence

Since the New Testament strongly emphasizes unity and fidelity to apostolic teaching, different Christian traditions offer differing explanations for the existence of multiple churches.

1. Apostolic Succession

The Catholic Church maintains that Christ founded one visible Church governed by the Apostles and their successors. It points out to us that apostolic authority has continued through the bishops, preserving the same deposit of faith throughout history. From this perspective, later ecclesial bodies that separated from this historic Church lack biblical authorization for their separation.

2. Restoration (Most Protestant Traditions)

Many Protestant communities argue that significant corruption entered the life and teaching of the historic Church over time. They therefore understand the Reformation not as the creation of a new Church but as an effort to restore the original apostolic faith using Scripture as the supreme authority.

3. Unity in Essentials

Many modern evangelical denominations maintain that Christians can remain united despite disagreements over doctrines they consider secondary. According to this view, denominations are different expressions of the same universal Church, provided they agree on what are regarded as the essential doctrines of Christianity.

A Traditional Catholic Evaluation

From a traditional Catholic perspective, the New Testament nowhere grants believers authority to establish separate ecclesial bodies based on differing interpretations of doctrine. The apostles consistently condemn schism, command unity in faith, and insist that the apostolic teaching is to be preserved intact.

Consequently, if Christ established one Church and entrusted one deposit of faith to the Apostles, then competing churches teaching contradictory doctrines cannot all represent the fullness of that apostolic faith. The existence of conflicting denominations is therefore understood not as something authorized by Scripture, but as the result of divisions that arose after the apostolic age.

Whether one accepts that conclusion depends upon one’s understanding of the Church, apostolic authority, and the interpretation of Scripture. Catholics argue that Scripture, read together with the witness of the early Church, points to the preservation of one visible Church rather than the legitimacy of multiple independent churches teaching conflicting doctrines.

Saint Paul on Church Authority 🏛️

The Church: Pillar and Guardian of the Truth

Many Christians believe that the Bible alone is the final authority for the Christian faith. Yet when St. Paul describes the role of the Church, he uses language that assigns to it a unique and indispensable authority.

The Direct Statement

In 1 Timothy 3:15, Paul writes:

“The church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark (foundation/buttress) of the truth.”

This is not casual or symbolic language. Paul deliberately employs two architectural images.

• A pillar supports and displays a structure.

• A buttress or foundation gives strength and stability.

The Church is therefore not merely a collection of believers or a passive repository of doctrine. It is the divinely established institution entrusted with upholding, defending, and proclaiming God’s truth.

Notice also what Paul does not say. He does not call Scripture the pillar and bulwark of the truth. He gives that description to the Church.

The Apostolic Foundation

Paul expands this idea in Ephesians 2:19–20:

“...built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”

Christ is the indispensable cornerstone upon whom everything depends.

The apostles and prophets constitute the foundation because Christ entrusted His authority to them and commissioned them to teach in His name.

The Church is therefore inseparable from the apostolic office.

This harmonizes perfectly with Christ’s words to Peter:

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church...” (Matthew 16:18)

The Church is built by Christ, upon the apostolic foundation, with Christ Himself as the cornerstone.

In St. Paul’s writings, the authority of the Church is deeply rooted in divine commission, serving as a vehicle for Christ’s rule through apostolic teaching, community governance, and spiritual edification.

Divine Origin of Apostolic Authority

Paul consistently frames his authority not as coming from human leaders or institutional popularity, but directly from Jesus Christ and God the Father.

• Direct Commission: In letters like Galatians 1:1, he insists his apostleship is “not from men nor by a man,” anchoring his right to instruct churches in his encounter with the risen Christ.

• The Standard of Truth: Because his message originated from divine revelation, Paul treats his written commands as the “command of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 14:37-38), making apostolic tradition the foundational rule for early Christian faith and practice.

Governance and Discipline

Paul’s view of church authority is active and practical, designed to maintain the structural and moral integrity of local bodies.

• Maintaining Order: He exercises authority to resolve internal disputes, correct theological drift (such as legalism in Galatia), and direct proper worship conduct (1 Corinthians 11).

• Corrective Discipline: Paul expects local church bodies to enforce moral boundaries, instructing communities to handle unrepentant members to preserve the holiness of the body (1 Corinthians 5:3-5).

The Living Transmission of the Faith

Paul never teaches Christians to separate themselves from the Church and rely upon private interpretation alone.

Instead he commands believers to preserve the apostolic teaching in every form in which it was delivered:

“Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15)

The apostles transmitted the faith in two complementary ways:

• by inspired writings (Sacred Scripture),

• and by authoritative oral teaching (Sacred Tradition).

The Church was established to preserve both faithfully through the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

The Catholic Understanding

The Catholic Church does not teach that the Church invents truth.

Truth comes from God alone.

Christ is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

Rather, the Church is the divinely appointed guardian, defender, and authoritative interpreter of the Deposit of Faith entrusted to the apostles.

This is precisely why Paul can describe the Church as “the pillar and bulwark of the truth.”

If the Church is commissioned by God to uphold the truth, then Christians cannot rightly dismiss her authority while claiming to follow the teaching of St. Paul.

The biblical picture is clear:

• Christ is the source of truth.

• The apostles are its divinely appointed foundation.

• The Church is its pillar and guardian.

• The faithful are called to receive and remain in that apostolic faith.

Dear Reader,

When Protestants make the claim that something we believe is not found in the bible what they are actually professing is actually their ignorance of scripture and Catholicism.

I often put it to them saying, “so how many bible verses will it take to make you repent of your heresy and become Catholic !”.

As Catholics, we must remember that the bible is a Catholic book and we Catholics are master of that text as we have been reading and clarifying what it means for the last 2000 years !

Hence it should be any easy work for us to demonstrate what we believe can be shown implicity or explicity (or both) from scripture.

A closer look.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 "𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘" 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛: 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲)

​Ask almost any modern Protestant or non-Catholic sect about their primary objection to the Catholic Church, and you will hear the same confident slogan: "That is not in the Bible!"

​From Purgatory and praying for the dead, to honoring Mary and confessing sins to a priest, sectarian critics continuously tell their followers that Catholic practices are merely "human traditions" with zero biblical foundation.

​But have they actually read the full, unedited Scriptures?

​The ironic tragedy of modern Protestantism is that many of its members attack Catholic doctrines simply because 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. When you open the Scriptures with historical context and theological depth, an undeniable truth emerges: the very doctrines they claim are "missing" are woven directly into the Word of God.

​Here is a definitive list of Catholic doctrines that critics claim are "not in the Bible" and the exact passages that prove them wrong.

​𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱 & 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "Purgatory is a invention of the Popes! Once you die, you go straight to Heaven or Hell, and praying for the dead is completely unbiblical!"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱: In 𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟮:𝟰𝟰–𝟰𝟱, Judas Maccabeus and his men offered prayers and sacrifices for their fallen soldiers: "For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead... Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: In 𝟭 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝟯:𝟭𝟯–𝟭𝟱, Saint Paul explicitly describes a post-death judgment where a person’s works are tested by fire: "If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire." This is not Hell (because in Hell no one is saved), nor is it Heaven (where there is no suffering/loss). It is the exact biblical reality Catholics call 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 a temporary state of divine cleansing for those saved in Christ.

​𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲: Jesus Himself implied a place of purification after death in 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝟭𝟮:𝟯𝟮, stating that certain sins "will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

​𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻)

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "The dead are sleeping in the grave and cannot hear you! Praying to Saints is necromancy and idolatry!"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁: Jesus shattered the idea that the dead are unconscious: "He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him" (Luke 20:38).

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝟭𝟮:𝟭 tells us that we are surrounded by a "great cloud of witnesses" in Heaven who actively observe our earthly journey.

​𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗱: In 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟱:𝟴, Saint John sees the heavenly elders holding "golden bowls full of incense, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀." In 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟴:𝟯–𝟰, an angel offers the prayers of God’s people upon the altar before the throne. If those in Heaven are presenting our prayers directly to God, they obviously hear us and intercede for us!

​𝟯. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "I confess my sins directly to God! Why would I tell my sins to a mortal man?"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: While God alone forgives sins, He explicitly chose human ministers as His instruments. On the evening of His Resurrection, Jesus breathed on the Apostles and said: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld" (John 20:22–23).

​How can a priest forgive or bind a sin unless the believer confesses it aloud first?

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Saint Paul confirms this delegated authority in 𝟮 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝟱:𝟭𝟴: "God... reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." Confession is not bypassing God; it is obeying the exact sacramental order Jesus established.

​𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝗺𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "The communion bread and wine are just symbolic reminders of the Last Supper!"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆: In John 6:51–56, Jesus insisted repeatedly: "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink... Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you." When His followers stumbled at His literal language and walked away, Jesus did not call them back to say "it's just a symbol." He let them leave because He meant every word!

​𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆: Saint Paul warns in 𝟭 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝟭𝟭:𝟮𝟳–𝟮𝟵: "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord... For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself." You cannot sin against a mere piece of symbolic bread; Paul's grave warning only makes sense because Christ is truly, substantially Present in the Eucharist.

​𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 & 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "Mary was just an ordinary envelope used to deliver Jesus. She has no special role!"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿: In 𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝟭:𝟰𝟴, Mary under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit declared: "For behold, from now on ALL generations will call me blessed." (Which church actually fulfills this biblical mandate every single day? The Catholic Church!)

​𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 (𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗸): In 𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝟭:𝟮𝟴, the Archangel Gabriel addresses her not by name, but by a divine title: "Hail, Full of Grace" (Kecharitomene in Greek, signifying an enduring state of total perfection).

​𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹: In 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟮:𝟭𝟳, the Dragon goes to war against the Woman and "the rest of her offspring, those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus." According to Scripture, if you are a follower of Jesus, Mary is spiritually your Mother!

​𝟲. 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗯𝘆 "𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲" (𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗱𝗲)

​* 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺: "All you need to be saved is to accept Jesus in your mind. Works have zero part in salvation!"

​* 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀:

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺: Modern sects preach "Salvation by Faith Alone." Yet, in the entire Holy Bible, the exact phrase "𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲" appears only 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 and it explicitly rejects the Protestant slogan: "You see that a person is justified by works and NOT BY FAITH ALONE" (James 2:24).

​𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱: 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝟮:𝟮𝟲 declares: "For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead."

​𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: On Judgment Day in 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝟮𝟱:𝟯𝟭–𝟰𝟲, Jesus judges souls based on their active works of mercy feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned.

​𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀

​The next time a sectarian preacher tells you that a Catholic practice is "not in the Bible," ask yourself: Are they sharing the complete Word of God, or are they presenting a filtered, cherry-picked version designed to protect human-made Protestant traditions?

​The Catholic Church does not fear the Bible. Why? Because the Catholic Church is the very institution that compiled, preserved, and guarded the Holy Scriptures for over 2,000 years under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

​Stop relying on shallow slogans and anti-Catholic myths. Open the Scriptures in their historical fullness, and discover that every road in the Bible leads directly home to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!

Dear Readers,

​Ask almost any modern, human-made sect about their primary accusation against the Catholic Church, and you will get the exact same repetitive answer: “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘦𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘺.”

​It is an endlessly repeated, superficial slogan. Out of the vast, profound, and deeply transformative pages of the Holy Bible, many sectarian critics seem to base their entire theological identity on a single misunderstanding: an inability to distinguish between a 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 and a 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗹.

​They proudly claim: “𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘈𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘎𝘰𝘥!”

​But have they ever stopped to read their own Bibles in full? Have they ever considered the dangerous theological trap their logic creates?

​If the simple creation of a physical statue or image is intrinsically sinful, then they are inadvertently making a blasphemous claim: 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘄.

​𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱: 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗲𝘀

​Sectarian critics love to quote 𝗘𝘅𝗼𝗱𝘂𝘀 𝟮𝟬:𝟰–𝟱 (”𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦...”). But they stop reading right there, cutting off the context of the Law.

​If God intended a total, absolute prohibition on making any physical representation of heavenly realities, why did He command Moses to make statues just a few chapters later?

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱: 𝗜𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗼𝗱𝘂𝘀 𝟮𝟱:𝟭𝟴–𝟮𝟬, immediately after giving the Ten Commandments, God explicitly commands Moses: ​”𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘪𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥; 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮, 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵.” ​God commanded two massive, three-dimensional statues of angels to be placed directly on top of the Ark of the Covenant inside the Holy of Holies!

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘇𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗜𝗻 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝟮𝟭:𝟴–𝟵, when the Israelites were bitten by poisonous snakes, God did not tell them to just look up at the sky. He commanded Moses: ​”𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘵, 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦.” ​God used a physical, manufactured bronze statue as an instrument of divine healing.

​𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: 𝗜𝗻 𝟭 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝟲:𝟮𝟯–𝟯𝟱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝟯:𝟳–𝟭𝟰, King Solomon filled the Holy Temple of Jerusalem with carved statues of cherubim, lions, palm trees, and bronze oxen. Did God punish Solomon for making statues? No! God blessed the Temple with His divine presence (𝟭 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝟴:𝟭𝟬–𝟭𝟭).

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀:

If making a statue is 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 a sin, then did God commit a sin when He commanded Moses and Solomon to build statues? Of course not! God cannot sin. Therefore, the sectarian interpretation that “𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯” is factually, biblically, and logically 𝗙𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗘.

​𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗼?

​If you want to understand biblical truth, look at the life, culture, and worship of Jesus Christ in the Gospels.

​𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Every year, Jesus attended the Temple in Jerusalem (𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝟮:𝟰𝟭; 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝟮:𝟭𝟯). He called the Temple “𝘔𝘺 𝘍𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦” (𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝟮:𝟭𝟲).

​𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲? The Temple was filled with massive golden cherubim and carved images. When Jesus entered the Temple, He cleansed it of the money changers and dishonest merchants (𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝟮𝟭:𝟭𝟮). But He did 𝗡𝗢𝗧 tear down the statues of the cherubim! He honored the sacred, image-filled sanctuary of His Father.

​If having carved images in a place of worship makes an institution “pagan,” then by sectarian logic, Jesus Himself worshiped in a “pagan” Temple! This shows how absurd their argument becomes when tested against Scripture.

​𝟯. 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰: 𝗜𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹

​The fundamental error of modern sects is a complete failure of basic logic and human psychology. They confuse the 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 with the 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁.

​𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗿𝘆? Pagans believed that a statue WAS a god, or that a deity’s spirit was literally trapped inside the wood, metal, or stone. In 𝗘𝘅𝗼𝗱𝘂𝘀 𝟯𝟮:𝟰, when the Israelites made the Golden Calf, they explicitly bowed down and said: “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘴, 𝘖 𝘐𝘴𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘭, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘵.” They attributed divinity and divine deliverance to melted jewelry.

​𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? For 2,000 years, no Catholic has ever believed that a statue of stone, wood, or plaster created the universe, died for our sins, or possesses inherent divine power. A Catholic statue is simply a 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 functioning exactly like a photograph of a beloved mother, spouse, or child in a wallet. You do not love the paper; you love the person the paper represents!

​𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰𝘆:

Sects argue: “𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘯!”

​This is broken logic. Pagans also built altars, offered prayers, raised their hands, sang songs, and built meeting places. If using something that pagans also used makes you pagan, then anyone who prays, sings songs, or builds a church building is practicing paganism!

​It is not the physical object that determines idolatry; it is the 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁. Catholics worship (latria) 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗘 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we honor (dulia) the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Apostles, or the Saints through visual arts, we are honoring the grace of God manifested in human lives.

​𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵

​The Catholic Church uses sacred art for the very same reason God commanded it in the Old Testament: 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱, 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.

​Before modern printing presses existed, sacred paintings and statues served as the “Bible of the poor,” teaching illiterate generations the sacred narrative of salvation history.

​To our separated brothers and sisters who attack the Church with shallow slogans about statues:

Stop using a human-made, surface-level doctrine that reduces the majesty of God’s Word to an obsession over plaster and wood. Stop limiting God by forbidding what He Himself commanded.

​Step off the tiring stage of sectarian misinterpretation, and come home to the authentic, historic, and biblically complete Church where God is worshiped in Spirit and in Truth, and where His Saints are remembered with honor and love.

Dear Reader,

As a follow up on our previous article, I think it would be wise to look at one final point in regards to the canon of Scripture that is often put foward by Protestants trying to defend their having removed books from the Old Testament.

Protestants will often put forward the idea that because St. Jerome placed the apocryphal books in a separate section they are on to be considered inspired.

Well, actually, this isn’t actually the whole picture.

1. The claim about Jerome is only partly true—and therefore misleading.

Yes, St. Jerome initially held a restrictive view of the canon and preferred the Hebrew text for the Old Testament. In his Prologus Galeatus, he famously placed books such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, and Maccabees outside his preferred Hebrew canon.

However what one must keep in mind is that St. Jerome primarily translated his Old Testament from the original Hebrew rather than the Greek Septuagint. He recognized that the books known as the Apocrypha (or Deuterocanon) were not in the Hebrew Bible. Consequently, he advocated for a two-tier system of Scripture:

• Canonical Books: Inspired books used to confirm doctrine.

• Ecclesiastical Books: Helpful books that could be read for the edification of the people, but not used to establish doctrine. [1]

What is more is that this does not prove that the Catholic Church rejected these books.

Jerome was a highly respected scholar, but he was not the Church’s infallible canon. He could be—and was—wrong on questions where the Church later defined the matter.

Jerome himself eventually yielded to the authority of the Church, writing translations of some of these texts (like Tobit and Judith) when asked.

More importantly, Jerome did not simply leave the books out of the Vulgate. He translated or included them. The historical record also shows that his position was not the only position in the ancient Church. The Greek Bible remained enormously important to early Christianity and was the Old Testament of the Christian Church for much of the first millennium.

And Jerome himself was not always consistent. His own writings show that his attitude toward these books was more complicated than the simplistic claim:

“Jerome rejected them, therefore the Catholic Church rejected them.”

That argument would be like saying:

“St. Augustine held a particular opinion, therefore the Catholic Church must hold that opinion.”

The Fathers are important witnesses—but no individual Father is the final judge of the canon.

2. The crucial point: Jerome’s personal opinion does not override the Church’s canon

The decisive historical question is:

Did the Church accept these books as Scripture?

The answer is that major Catholic canonical traditions included them.

The canon was affirmed in the Latin Church through councils and ecclesiastical authority, culminating definitively in the Council of Trent. The Catholic canon includes Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1–2 Maccabees, and the Greek additions to Esther and Daniel.

Thus, the Protestant argument effectively says:

“We should follow Jerome when he disagreed with the Church, but ignore the broader Catholic tradition and the Church’s definitive judgment.”

That is not a consistent appeal to history.

3. St. Jerome was a biblical Scholar and staunch Catholic who upheld the Catholic faith against the heretics of his time.

Protestants in this regard are being somewhat dishonest as they are only being selective in what they want to follow St. Jerome on.

They there not willing to follow St. Jerome in everything, but in only what they find fits in with their false narrative. They are not going to be logical in following St. Jerome in becoming a Catholic and embracing everything else he embraced, only what they can find that they think might bulster their false claims !

What is more is we must grasp the fact that St. Jerome was not an infallible judge here. That is the role of the Church.

Jerome, he was a great biblical scholar but not the infallible judge of the canon. He initially preferred the Hebrew canon and expressed doubts about several books, but his private opinion did not override the broader Catholic tradition or the Church’s canonical judgments. The Catholic Church did not receive its canon from Jerome; Jerome was a member of the Church whose opinions on the canon were ultimately subject to the Church’s authority.

The real question is not, ‘Did every ancient manuscript of the Septuagint contain exactly the same books?’ The real question is, ‘Which books did the Church, guided by Apostolic Tradition, recognize as inspired Scripture?’ The answer was ultimately defined by the Church, not by Jerome, Luther, or the later Protestant Reformers.”

The reality here is that if the Protestant position depends on reconstructing the canon from the contents of ancient manuscripts, then it faces the same problem it accuses Catholics of having—because the ancient manuscripts themselves do not all contain precisely the same collection of books.

Dear Reader,

In looking at what we have presently put forward, namely in demonstrating how Protestants have violated scripture, not only by their false translation of it, but also by the fact that they removed various books from it.

Today, we will look at the erroneous claim that its often put forward as a means of rejecting the Septuagint (the Old Testament text that the Catholic Church makes use of), namely the ideat that since there are no surviving ancient copies of the Septuagint therefore we don't know its exact content.

This claim rests on many false historical assumptions.

The claim that “There are no surviving ancient copies of the Septuagint” is simply false !

The earliest evidence definitively dismantles the idea that no ancient copies exist:

• The Judean Desert Fragments: Discoveries such as the Greek Minor Prophets Scroll (8ḤevXII gr) from the Nahal Hever cave date to the 1st century BC.

• Early Papyri: Ancient papyri fragments from Egypt, such as Papyrus Rylands 458 (dating to the mid-2nd century BC) and Papyrus Fouad 266 (late 1st century BC), clearly demonstrate that a translated Greek version of the Old Testament was actively used long before the Christian era.

What is more is that we do possess ancient Greek Old Testament manuscripts traditionally associated with the Septuagint, including:

• Codex Vaticanus (c. 325–350 AD): Housed in the Vatican, this is one of the oldest and most intact surviving copies of the Greek Bible.

• Codex Sinaiticus (mid-4th century AD): Preserves a massive portion of the Greek Old Testament.

• Codex Alexandrinus (c. 400–440 AD): Contains a near-complete Greek translation

The surviving portion of Codex Sinaiticus, for example, contains Tobit, Judith, 1 and 4 Maccabees, Wisdom, and Sirach alongside the Greek Old Testament.

The fact of the matter is that the Septuagint was originally a Greek translation tradition of the Jewish Scriptures, produced over time. Different ancient codices could contain different collections of books. But this is not unique to the Septuagint.

The early Church also had some variation in the contents and order of biblical codices. For example, Codex Sinaiticus even contains additional Christian writings such as the Epistle of Barnabas and The Shepherd of Hermas after the biblical books. That does not mean Christians had no concept of Scripture.

While the Septuagint’s content is widely known, scholars acknowledge a specific caveat: the Septuagint was not a single, locked-down book finalized on a specific day. Rather we can say that it was a library of texts translated by different communities and individuals over a span of about two centuries ( 250–100 BC). Consequently:

• Alexandrian Fluidity: Ancient codices (like the aforementioned Vaticanus or Sinaiticus) occasionally exhibit slight variations in their exact table of contents and book lengths. For instance, certain manuscripts include different combinations of the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical books.

• Textual Recensions: Throughout the early centuries, scribes revised specific books of the Septuagint to bring them closer to the evolving Hebrew texts, giving rise to recensions like the Kaige and Origen’s Hexapla.

Because of this wealth of manuscript evidence, scholars can compile critical editions, such as the Septuaginta, to reconstruct the texts used by the ancient Jewish and early Christian world.

The fact that manuscripts are incomplete or differ in contents does not mean that the Septuagint was an unknowable collection. The same is true of the New Testament: ancient manuscripts sometimes contain different books, yet Christians do not conclude that the New Testament had no identifiable textual tradition !

In short, the argument confuses textual variation with total uncertainty.

The real question is therefore not:

“Did every ancient Greek Bible have exactly the same table of contents?”

but:

“Which books did the Church ultimately recognize as inspired Scripture?”

The Catholic answer is that the Church, guided by apostolic Tradition, discerned the canon. The Catechism explicitly states that the Church did not invent inspiration but discerned which writings belonged to the canon.

So, variation in ancient collections does not disprove the Catholic canon. It demonstrates why an authoritative process of canon discernment was necessary.

We can never underestimate this reality. If you have a bible today, it is thanks to the the Catholic Church.

Protestants will try to defend their removal of the canonical books of the old testament by claiming they followed the Jewish canon while Catholics followed the the Septuagint. The reality is that this argument is not correct.

A proper look at the matter. .

1. There was no universally accepted “Jewish canon” in the time of Christ

The claim often assumes that, during the time of Jesus, there was already a universally fixed Jewish canon of exactly 39 books corresponding to the Protestant Old Testament.

But the historical reality is more complicated. Different Jewish communities used different collections of sacred books. The Septuagint—the Greek Scriptures widely used by Greek-speaking Jews—contained the books later called the Deuterocanonicals.

The early Christians inherited the Scriptures of the Church through the apostolic and early Christian tradition—not from a later Protestant theory of a fixed Jewish canon.

2. The Apostles and the early Church commonly used the Septuagint

The New Testament frequently quotes the Old Testament in forms that correspond more closely to the Septuagint than to the later Masoretic Hebrew text.

The Septuagint was not some late Catholic invention. It was a pre-Christian Jewish translation used extensively by the early Church.

The fact that the early Christians frequently used the Septuagint matters because the question is:

Which Old Testament Scriptures did the Church receive and use?

The answer cannot simply be: “Whatever canon was later standardized by Rabbinic Judaism.”

3. The “Jewish canon” was not simply a neutral, universally settled canon

The often-repeated claim that the Jews definitively closed the canon at the Council of Jamnia/Yavneh is historically far too simplistic.

There was no universally recognized ecumenical Jewish council that functioned like a Christian council definitively declaring:

“These 39 books, and no others, are the inspired Old Testament.”

The development of the Jewish biblical collection was complex, and Jewish communities did not all possess identical collections.

So the Protestant argument risks an historical problem:

Why should the Christian Church receive her Old Testament canon from a later rabbinic tradition that rejected the Christian Messiah?

4. Catholics did not merely choose the Vulgate over the Hebrew

This is another important point.

The Catholic Church did not say:

“The Vulgate has seven extra books, therefore we will accept them.”

Rather, the Church’s acceptance of the Deuterocanonical books is rooted in the wider tradition of the Church, including:

• the Septuagint

• the usage of the Apostles and early Christians

• the writings of the Fathers

• ancient Christian biblical manuscripts

• regional councils

• the liturgical use of these books

The Vulgate was an important witness to this tradition, but the Catholic canon was not created merely because St. Jerome happened to translate these books.

5. The Protestant Reformers did not all simply “follow the Jewish canon”

The Reformers themselves did not consistently treat the Deuterocanonical books as simply worthless or non-Christian.

For example, Martin Luther included the Deuterocanonical books in his German Bible, placing them in a separate section called the Apocrypha. He described them as books that were useful and good to read.

The original King James Version of 1611 also included the Apocrypha.

So historically, the transition to the modern Protestant Bible containing only the 66-book canon was not simply:

“The Reformers discovered the ancient Jewish canon and restored it.”

The story is more complicated.

The key question for the Protestant is this:

Who gave you your canon?

If the answer is:

“The Jewish canon.”

Then ask:

Which Jewish canon?

• The Hebrew canon as later preserved by Rabbinic Judaism?

• The Septuagint used by many Jews before and during the time of Christ?

• The canon used by the early Church?

• The canon of the ancient Christian councils?

And then:

Why should the Church accept the canon of post-Christian rabbinic Judaism rather than the canon received and used by the Christian Church?

The Catholic position in one sentence

The Catholic Church did not “add seven books to the Bible.”

Rather:

The Catholic Church preserved the broader Old Testament canon received through the apostolic and early Christian tradition, while the Protestant tradition later adopted a narrower canon substantially corresponding to the Hebrew Scriptures preserved by Rabbinic Judaism.

And this creates a serious problem for sola Scriptura:

The Bible does not contain its own table of contents.

The Protestant must rely on a historical tradition to know:

1. which books belong in the Bible,

2. which books do not,

3. which version of the Old Testament canon is correct.

So the question becomes:

If tradition was necessary to identify the canon, why is tradition suddenly unreliable when it preserves the seven Deuterocanonical books?

That is the fundamental Catholic apologetic argument.

Dear Reader,

It is important for us to grasp the role of the Church in relation to sacred Scripture. The Church does not claim that she made the text inspired but rather that she affirmed for us in an infallible manner what books are actually the inspired word of God and which are not.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DID NOT “CREATE” THE BIBLE

Catholics do not teach that the Church invented Scripture or made inspired books become inspired.

The books were inspired by God when they were written.

The real question is:

HOW DID CHRISTIANS KNOW WHICH BOOKS BELONGED IN THE BIBLE?

The early Christians received, read, and circulated many apostolic writings. But there was not immediate universal agreement about every book.

For centuries, Christians debated books such as:

Hebrews • James • Jude • 2 Peter • 2 & 3 John • Revelation

Some writings were accepted.
Some were disputed.
Some were eventually rejected.

So the question remains:

WHO HAD THE AUTHORITY TO DISCERN WHICH WRITINGS BELONGED TO THE CANON?

The Church did not create Scripture.

The Church recognised, preserved, and formally confirmed the writings that belonged to the apostolic deposit.

The Councils of Rome (382), Hippo (393), and Carthage (397) did not invent the 27 books of the New Testament.

They formally confirmed what had been received and preserved within the Churches.

THE BIBLE DOES NOT CONTAIN ITS OWN TABLE OF CONTENTS.

There is no inspired page saying:

“These are the inspired books. These are not.”

Therefore, even the belief in the biblical canon depends on something outside the individual books themselves:

THE HISTORICAL TESTIMONY AND DISCERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.

Christ did not leave His Church without authority or guidance:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”
— Matthew 28:19–20

“What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2

The Church did not make God’s Word inspired.

God inspired the Scriptures.

But the Church Christ established preserved them, recognised them, and handed them on.

THE BIBLE DID NOT FALL FROM HEAVEN AS A FINISHED BOOK.

It came to us through the Church Christ established.

I take the time to examine a little the example of the good theif as it is often false put forward by Protestants as an example of salvation by faith alone.

When we actually take time to examine this claim, we see that it isn’t the case at all.

Contrary to what is often claimed by Protestants, the example of the “good thief” is not an example of a merely intellectual “belief alone”—rather, he is an example of grace producing repentance, confession, love, courage, humility, and perseverance.

The reality is that Dismas was saved by grace through faith—but not by a dead faith.

His faith was alive and working through love:

He repented and acknowledged his guilt.

He feared God.

He defended Christ’s innocence.

He corrected the unrepentant thief.

He confessed Christ as King.

He humbly asked for mercy.

The Catholic argument is not that Dismas earned salvation by his works. Rather, God’s grace transformed him, and his transformed faith bore fruit in love and obedience.

That fits the broader New Testament framework :

Grace initiates salvation.

Faith receives Christ.

Grace transforms the believer.

Faith works through love.

The Christian must persevere in holiness.

Dismas proves that salvation is by grace through faith—but he does not prove “faith alone” as a barren intellectual belief detached from repentance, love, and obedience.

Paul’s framework of salvation—without ever using the phrase “faith alone”—includes justification by grace apart from works of human merit (entirely God’s work), followed by sanctification, where believers are called to cooperate with God’s grace and live a holy life. The goal is theosis: by grace, to become more like Christ and bring Christ to others. Moreover, it is not only James 2 that is often reinterpreted or set aside to defend sola fide, but also passages such as:

Matthew 19:16–17 – Jesus tells the rich young man, “If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”

Matthew 25:31–46 – The sheep and the goats are separated according to whether they lived out practical love for “the least of these,” illustrating faith working through love rather than a barren faith.

1 Thessalonians 4:3–8 – Paul teaches that God’s will is our sanctification and warns that the one who rejects this instruction is rejecting God, who gives us His Holy Spirit. These passages show that while salvation begins entirely by God’s grace, the New Testament consistently calls believers to persevere in obedient, grace-enabled holiness.

If the Holy Ghost wanted to reveal a “belief-alone” salvation, He would’ve just inspired Dismas to utter one line: “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

The thief on the cross: - repented and acknowledged his sin before Jesus and the crowd - defended Jesus’ Innocence before the crowd - provided brotherly correction to the unrepentant thief (”have you no fear of God?”). And with all humility (in spite of his faith that Jesus is Messiah-God and will Rise again) - only asked to be remembered. The “good” thief manifested a living faith working through love (Loving both God and neighbors).

This is a profoundly important reality to grasp and contemplate. . .

WHO DECIDED WHICH BOOKS BELONG IN THE BIBLE?

Dear Reader,

Today we examine a closer look at the authority of the Church and her essential role in providing us with the canon of Scripture.

Without the Church we wouldn’t know what the bible is. . .

I recall how a priest who was once confronted by a Protestant street evangelist and how the priest supprised the evangelist by telling he “didn’t know” what the bible was. And so the Protestant street preached was shocked to hear such words and went on to explain to him that the bible was the word of God. The priest responded to him saying, well, you say it is the word of God, but . . . well, how do you know it is the word of God? - The Muslims claim they have the word of God. The Mormons claim the same for the book of Mormon. How do you know those books in that bible are the word of God. The Protestant evangelist, well, he didn’t know how to respond. He had never seriously considered that. . . Well that is the real question we need to look at. And grasp, how do we know that those books contained in Scripture are the word of God with infallible certitude.

The reality is that we need an infallible guide to give us this certitude. That guide is the Church that Christ founded. The Catholic Church.

And important point her to grasp. The Church doesn’t make the text inspired. God does that. The is necessary however to confirm that such and such is with infallible certitude actually the word of God.

Putting it simply:

If the Church had no authority...

❓ Who decided that Hebrews belongs in the Bible?

❓ Who excluded the Gospel of Thomas?

❓ Who affirmed Revelation?

❓ Who confirmed four Gospels—and not five?

📚 THE BIBLE DOES NOT CONTAIN ITS OWN TABLE OF CONTENTS.

The canon depends upon historical discernment.

And that discernment was guided by the Church.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH BOOKS ARE THE BIBLE?

The certainty of the canon rests upon the authority of the Church that preserved, recognized, and proclaimed it.

Without Sacred Tradition and Apostolic authority, the canon would be uncertain.

Under the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

Scripture and Tradition were never competitors.

Scripture flows from Tradition.

“Stand firm and hold fast to the traditions you have been taught, either by word of mouth or by our letter.”

🔍 IT IS IN PLAIN SIGHT:

✦ God inspired the books.
✦ The Apostles wrote the books.
✦ The Church preserved the books.
✦ The Church discerned the books.
✦ The Church proclaimed the books.

📖 THE CANON IS NOT A PROTESTANT INVENTION.

It is the fruit of Apostolic Catholic discernment.

By the fourth century, the Church formally recognized the canon at:

• Council of Rome — AD 382
• Council of Hippo — AD 393
• Council of Carthage — AD 397

These councils did not invent the canon.

They confirmed what had already been received in the apostolic churches.

And the 27-book New Testament Christians use today is the fruit of that ecclesial discernment.

📜 THE EARLY FATHERS HELPED CLARIFY THE CANON:

✦ St. Irenaeus of Lyons defended the four Gospels and apostolic succession.

✦ St. Athanasius of Alexandria listed the 27 books of the New Testament in AD 367.

✦ St. Jerome translated the Latin Vulgate according to the recognized canon.

But even these great Fathers did not act independently.

The discernment was ecclesial—not individual.

🔥 THE QUESTION REMAINS:

If you reject the authority of the Church...

WHO GAVE YOU THE BIBLE?

The Bible did not fall from Heaven with its table of contents.

God inspired Scripture.
The Apostles transmitted the Faith.
The Church preserved and recognized the canon.

How Can Christ as a Jew, be at the same time the founder of the Catholic Church?

The apparent paradox disappears once we understand that Jesus did not found a religion separate from Judaism, but rather brought Judaism to its intended fulfillment.

Jesus was a Jew. He was born into the Jewish people, circumcised according to the Law (Luke 2:21), worshipped in the Temple (Luke 2:22–24), attended the synagogue (Luke 4:16), celebrated the Jewish feasts, and taught from the Hebrew Scriptures. He explicitly stated:

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)

The Catholic understanding is that Jesus is the promised Jewish Messiah foretold by the prophets. Therefore, Christianity is not a rejection of God’s covenant with Israel but its fulfillment. Just as the acorn becomes the oak tree without ceasing to be the same living reality, so the Church emerges from Israel as the fulfillment of God’s plan.

The Church as the Fulfilled Israel

In the Old Testament, God established Israel as His covenant people. Jesus did not abolish this idea; He renewed and expanded it.

A striking sign of this is His choice of Twelve Apostles. Just as the twelve tribes descended from the sons of Jacob formed Israel, Christ established twelve Apostles as the foundation stones of the New Covenant people of God. He further singled out Peter:

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.” (Matthew 16:18)

The Church therefore sees herself not as a replacement for Israel but as Israel brought to completion in the Messiah.

The Sacraments Are Rooted in Jewish Worship

The central acts of Catholic worship arise directly from Jewish religious life.

The Eucharist was instituted during the Passover meal. At the Last Supper, Jesus took the ancient Passover—which commemorated Israel’s deliverance from Egypt—and transformed it into the New Covenant sacrifice:

“This is my body... This is my blood of the covenant.” (Matthew 26:26–28)

Just as the Passover lamb saved Israel, Christ became the true Paschal Lamb whose sacrifice redeems the world (John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7).

The Catholic Mass is therefore not a departure from Jewish worship but its fulfillment.

The First Christians Were Jews

Every Apostle was Jewish. The Blessed Virgin Mary was Jewish. The first bishops, priests, and converts were Jewish.

The Church began in Jerusalem, not Rome. For a time, Christianity was understood as the messianic fulfillment of Judaism. The earliest believers continued worshipping in the Temple while proclaiming that Jesus was the promised Christ (Acts 2–3).

How the Church Became Universal

While Jesus’ earthly ministry focused primarily on Israel, His mission was always intended for the whole world.

The Great Commission

After the Resurrection, Christ commanded:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19)

The covenant was now to be extended to every people.

Pentecost

At Pentecost (Acts 2), Jews from many nations heard the Gospel proclaimed in their own languages. This signaled the beginning of the worldwide mission of the Church.

Cornelius and the Gentiles

In Acts 10, God gave Peter a vision revealing that the ceremonial distinctions of the Old Covenant had reached their fulfillment. Peter then baptized the Roman centurion Cornelius and his household—the first major Gentile converts admitted without becoming Jews first.

The Council of Jerusalem

The decisive moment came in Acts 15. The Apostles met in Jerusalem to determine whether Gentile converts needed circumcision and full observance of the Mosaic Law.

Under Peter’s leadership, the Council concluded that Gentiles could enter the Church directly through faith and baptism without becoming Jews. This decision established the Church’s universal mission and identity.

The Catholic Answer in One Sentence

Jesus was Jewish because He came as Israel’s Messiah; He founded the Catholic Church because He fulfilled Israel’s mission and opened God’s covenant to all nations.

Thus there is no contradiction:

• Jesus was a Jew by birth, culture, religion, and covenant.

• Jesus fulfilled the Jewish faith as the promised Messiah.

• Jesus founded the Catholic Church as the New Covenant people of God.

• The Church grew out of Judaism and carried God’s promises to the whole world.

The Catholic Church is therefore not something Jesus founded instead of Judaism, but the fulfillment of what biblical Judaism was always pointing toward. As St. Augustine famously expressed it:

“The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.”

In this sense, Jesus being Jewish and Jesus founding the Catholic Church are not opposing truths—they are inseparably connected realities of the same divine plan.

From the Catholic theological perspective, this dual identity makes perfect sense:

• Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus was the long-awaited Jewish Messiah (Christ) prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures. His life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the ancient Jewish covenants and sacrificial laws, rendering them complete. [1, 2, 3]

• Universal (Catholic) Mission: The term “Catholic” means “universal”. While God’s revelation began specifically with the Jewish people, it was always the divine plan to extend salvation and God’s kingdom to all nations. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

• The Root and the Branches: Saint Paul famously compared the relationship between Judaism and the Church to an olive tree. The Jewish people are the natural root, and the Church (made up of both Jewish and Gentile followers) are the branches grafted into that same tree.

The Church is the perfect fulfilment of the entire Old Testament and what it stood for.

The Catholic Church alone is the perfect fulfilment of all Judaism was and stood for. It was God preparing His people for the ultimate reality that was to come in Christ and His Church !

Dear Friends,

When we look at the history of the Church we see that it is literally filled with strife and contraversies.

However these disputes and divisions have only served to show how from the earlies of times the Bishop of Rome, the Pope was always see at the highest authority in the Church. What is more is than in light of the present situation in the Church no one in the early Church at the same time, thought that the Pope was above criticism ! They understood that the Pope has the supreme authority in resolving dogmatic disputes but they also understood the importance putting forward matters in clear and strong terms.

One such situation that helps us have a greater clarity on the matter is the disputes that St. Cyprian had with Pope Stephen.

A few things for us to consider then.

1. St. Cyprian actually taught a remarkably high doctrine of the Roman See

Long before the rebaptism controversy, Cyprian described the Roman Church in extraordinary language.

In On the Unity of the Catholic Church he writes:

“God is one, and Christ is one, and His Church is one, and the chair founded upon Peter by the word of the Lord is one.”

Again he says:

“He who deserts the Chair of Peter upon whom the Church was founded, does he still trust himself to be in the Church?”

These are not the words of someone who thought Rome merely gave helpful advice.

2. During the Novatian schism Cyprian appealed to Rome

When Novatian attempted to become bishop of Rome, Cyprian defended Pope Cornelius.

He called Rome:

“the principal Church, from which the unity of the priesthood has arisen.”

(Letter 59)

He also condemned those who sailed to Rome to challenge the Pope’s authority.

This is difficult to reconcile with the idea that Rome possessed only honorary influence.

3. The rebaptism controversy was precisely that—a dispute

The controversy concerned whether converts baptized by heretics should be baptized again.

Cyprian believed they should.

Pope Stephen I insisted that valid Trinitarian baptism could not be repeated and threatened to break communion with bishops who rebaptized.

The important point is this:

Cyprian disagreed.

Catholics do not deny that saints sometimes resisted or argued with popes on disciplinary or theological questions that had not yet been definitively settled.

The existence of a disagreement does not prove the absence of papal primacy !

4. History vindicated Rome

The universal Church ultimately accepted Pope Stephen’s position.

The doctrine that baptism administered with water and the Trinitarian formula is valid even outside the visible Church became the Church’s settled teaching.

Even Augustine of Hippo, writing against the Donatists, appealed to Stephen’s judgment and noted that Cyprian’s error did not prevail.

Augustine praises Cyprian’s holiness while acknowledging he was mistaken on this issue.

Thus history did not vindicate Cyprian against Rome—it vindicated Rome against Cyprian.

5. Cyprian never denied Roman primacy itself

Cyprian argued that every bishop possesses the fullness of the episcopal office.

This is often summarized by his famous statement:

“No one of us sets himself up as a bishop of bishops.”

But notice what he was arguing about.

He was objecting to Pope Stephen’s handling of a disciplinary controversy.

He was not writing a treatise denying that Rome possesses a unique Petrine office.

Catholic theology has always distinguished between:

• The Pope possessing supreme authority,

• And every prudential exercise of that authority being accepted without controversy.

6. Cyprian himself remained in communion with Rome

Despite the sharp dispute with Pope Stephen, Cyprian never established a rival papacy. He understood well that he was more than entited to disagree with a Pope on secondary matter.

He died a Catholic bishop in communion with the Roman Church.

This matters.

Contrast this with Novatian, who actually created a schism.

Cyprian fought Novatian while remaining within the Catholic Church.

A useful analogy

St. Paul publicly corrected St. Peter at Antioch (Galatians 2).

Not a single Church father concludes from that incident that Peter lacked primacy.

Likewise, Cyprian’s disagreement with Pope Stephen demonstrates that popes can be opposed in particular controversies; it does not demonstrate that the papacy is merely advisory.

In fact in many ways it puts forward the proper notion of the papacy, namely that the Pope himself is not above the faith nor above crictism. Likewise this is true of anyone in authority, either religious or secular.

The strongest Catholic argument

The argument actually cuts the other way.

If Rome merely had honorary authority, why did Stephen’s decision become normative for the universal Church?

Why did later Fathers like Augustine explicitly side with Stephen over Cyprian?

Why did Cyprian devote so much energy to arguing with Rome instead of simply ignoring it?

The controversy only makes sense if Rome’s judgment carried exceptional weight.

In short:

St. Cyprian certainly disagreed with Pope Stephen over the rebaptism controversy, but that does not prove he denied papal primacy. In fact, Cyprian repeatedly called Rome “the Chair of Peter” and “the principal Church, from which the unity of the priesthood has arisen.” He defended Pope Cornelius against schismatics, remained in communion with Rome throughout his life, and the universal Church ultimately accepted Pope Stephen’s position rather than Cyprian’s. The historical evidence shows a dispute over the exercise of papal authority—not a denial that such authority existed. This only serves to show how seriously the early Church took the reality of the exercise of Papal authority, thus confirming for us what we take for granted today.

It may seem that I have written extensivly on Mary, what more could be said? Well, to be honest, looking at Mary, we can say what St. Thomas Aquinas says of the Angels, the more we look at the Angels, the more we understand deeply the one who created them. Likewise with the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today, I will take the time to response to a fair objection put to us by one our readers. We welcome any honest question so long as the question in genuine and put forward in a spirit of want to understand for the sake of greater clarity.

Objection:

The objection follows as such in this manner: If God could preserve Mary from original sin in anticipation of Christ’s merits, why would such a step have been necessary at all? The objection assumes:

“The Holy Spirit could simply sanctify Christ at conception.”

Yes.

But grace also perfects everything surrounding Christ.

God sanctified:

• John the Baptist before birth (Luke 1:15)

• Jeremiah before birth (Jeremiah 1:5)

If God grants extraordinary holiness to prophets,

why is it unreasonable that He would give the greatest grace to His own Mother?

6. The Immaculate Conception magnifies Christ

Sometimes Protestants say:

“Mary didn’t need saving.”

The Church says exactly the opposite.

Mary was saved more perfectly than anyone else.

It is good to have a solid grasp of the nature of who exactly is the blessed Virgin Mary and what God has accomplished in her.

The Immaculate Conception is the Catholic dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception by the merits of Jesus Christ applied in advance. It does not mean that Mary did not need a Savior; rather, she was saved in the most perfect way—by preservation rather than by restoration.

While Scripture does not state the doctrine in a single explicit verse, Catholics argue that it is strongly supported by biblical typology and the cumulative witness of Scripture.

1. Genesis 3:15 – The Woman at Total Enmity

“I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall crush thy head...” (Douay-Rheims)

This is the first prophecy of the Redeemer.

Notice the parallels:

• The serpent = Satan

• The seed = Christ

• The woman = Mary

God says there will be enmity between the serpent and the woman.

Mary contained:

If God demanded the Ark be made of the purest materials and treated as utterly holy, how much more fitting that the woman who bore God Incarnate should be preserved from sin?

While Scripture certainly teaches that Paul’s Gospel was revealed by Christ Himself, it never presents Paul as an autonomous teacher establishing churches outside the authority and communion of the Apostles. On the contrary, both the New Testament and the earliest Christian writers reveal a Church that was hierarchical, sacramental, united under apostolic authority, and governed by bishops who succeeded the Apostles.

1. Paul Received the Gospel by Revelation—but Not Apart from the Church

Paul emphatically declares:

“For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.”

2. The Council of Jerusalem Demonstrates a Universal Teaching Authority

Acts 15 records the first great doctrinal controversy of Christianity: whether Gentile converts were required to observe the Mosaic Law.

Notice the process.

• The dispute is not settled by each local congregation.

• Nor is every believer left to interpret Scripture privately.

• The Apostles and elders assemble in council.

• Peter speaks authoritatively.

• James gives the pastoral judgment.

• A decree is issued to every church.

“It has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us...”

This language is extraordinary. The decision is presented as possessing divine authority.

The following chapter makes the matter even clearer:

“As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions which had been reached by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem.”

Paul himself delivers these decrees.

He does not tell each church to examine the matter independently.

He does not say, “Read the Scriptures and decide for yourselves.”

He commands obedience to the decisions of the Apostles and elders.

This is precisely the pattern later embodied in the Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic Church.

3. Paul Established a Hierarchical Church

Paul consistently appoints leaders over local churches.

He commands Titus:

“This is why I left you in Crete, that you might amend what was defective, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.”

Likewise Timothy receives authority over clergy:

“Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands.”

I take the time now to share with you greater biblical insight on the prophetics words of Our Lady regarding her own person.

Mary herself, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, prophesies that “all generations shall call me blessed.”

The Greek word translated “blessed” is μακαριοῦσίν (makariousin), meaning will call blessed, pronounce blessed, or declare happy/favored.

This is not Mary’s self-exaltation but a recognition of what God has done for her, as the following verse explains:

“Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.” (Luke 1:49)

Catholics therefore see honoring Mary as the fulfillment of Scripture, not a departure from it. To call Mary “Blessed Virgin Mary” echoes her own inspired prophecy.

Scripture: “All generations shall call me blessed.”

Question: If a Christian refuses to call Mary blessed, is he fulfilling or neglecting this prophecy?

This verse does not teach that Mary is divine or should be worshipped as a goddess. Rather, it teaches that every generation of Christians should recognize and proclaim her blessedness because of God’s grace and her unique role as the Mother of the Incarnate Son of God.

But to answer the question with greater clarity here, I want to quote the beautiful and clear words of Fr. Otto Hophan, Ofm, (From his work; Mary Our most blessed Lady, pg. 126) who clearly states: “In these few words of the Magnifcate the most blessed Virgin herself, filled with the Holy Ghost, has laid the foundation of our duty to venerate her, as well as the limits of this veneration. Whoever does not honour Mary, sins against the Holy God.” Why? - He goes on to explain the reason being that : “He prevents, for his own person, the fulfillment of a prophecy inspired by the Holy Ghost.” !

Question: Is there anyone else in scripture that ever makes that claim about themselves

In short, no. There is no other person in Scripture who, under divine inspiration, declares that all generations will call them blessed.

Mary’s statement in Luke 1:48 is unique:

“For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48)

Several biblical figures are called blessed, but none make this universal, prophetic claim about themselves.

Here are some comparisons:

Leah says:

“Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed.”

(Genesis 30:13)

This is the closest parallel. However:

Leah speaks only of “the daughters” (women), not all generations.

Her statement concerns her fertility and social status, not a universal, enduring recognition throughout salvation history.

The righteous are often called blessed (e.g., Psalm 1:1; Matthew 5:3–12), but these are general descriptions, not personal prophecies.

Abraham, Moses, David, the Apostles, and even Christ Himself never say, “All generations shall call me blessed.”

Mary’s declaration is also part of inspired prophecy in the Magnificat. Immediately afterward she explains why:

“For he that is mighty hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.” - Luke 1:49

The emphasis is entirely on God’s action. Mary is blessed because God has chosen her and bestowed extraordinary grace upon her.

Mary is unique in the plan of God

Mary is the only person in Scripture who foretells that every generation will proclaim her blessed.

I leave you with the beautiful words of the great saint and father of the Church, St. Athanasius (4th century) regarding the Blessed Virgin Mary to contemplate:

“O noble Virgin, truly you are greater than any other greatness. For who is your equal in greatness, O dwelling place of God the word? To whom among all creatures shall I compare you, O Virgin? You are greater than them all O Covenant, clothed with purity instead of Gold ! You are the Ark in which is found the golden vessel containing the true manna, that is, the flesh in which divinity resides’ - St. Athanasius, Homily of the Papyrus of Turin, 71:216.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the masterpiece of God’s grace and the perfect model of Christian holiness. From the first moment of her Immaculate Conception until her glorious Assumption, every thought, word, and action was directed toward the greater glory of God.

She is not simply someone to admire from afar but a Mother to imitate. The Church has always looked to Mary as the supreme example of what every disciple of Christ is called to become through the grace of God.

As St. Ambrose wrote:

“Let the soul of Mary be in each of you, to magnify the Lord.”

By contemplating Mary’s virtues, we learn how to follow Christ more faithfully and become conformed to His Sacred Heart.

✝MARY MOST PURE

Mary was preserved from Original Sin by the singular privilege of the Immaculate Conception and remained free from every personal sin throughout her life. Her heart belonged entirely to God, unclouded by selfishness, impurity, or divided affection.

Purity is far more than bodily chastity—it is the complete ordering of the heart toward God. Mary’s purity allowed the Holy Ghost to dwell within her in perfect fullness, making her the living Ark of the New Covenant.

She teaches us that true purity is loving God above all things and guarding both body and soul for His service.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

✝MARY MOST PRUDENT

At every moment of her life, Mary sought not her own will but God’s. She pondered His mysteries in silence, never acting rashly or speaking carelessly.

True prudence is not worldly cleverness but the virtue that enables us to choose the good according to God’s wisdom. Mary’s life demonstrates that the prudent soul listens before speaking, prays before acting, and trusts before understanding.

She teaches us to discern God’s will through prayer, Scripture, and faithful obedience to His Church.

“Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)

✝MARY MOST HUMBLE

Although chosen to become the Mother of God, Mary never exalted herself. She called herself simply the servant of the Lord, recognizing that every grace she possessed came entirely from God.

Humility is the foundation of holiness because it acknowledges that without God we can do nothing. Mary’s humility attracted the gaze of Heaven and prepared her to receive the greatest privilege ever granted to a creature.

She teaches us to seek God’s glory rather than our own and to rejoice whenever Christ increases, even if we decrease.

“He has regarded the humility of His handmaid.” (Luke 1:48)

✝ MOST FAITHFUL

Mary believed every promise God made, even when she could not fully understand His plan. She believed at Nazareth, at Bethlehem, during the hidden years, and beneath the Cross when nearly everyone else had fled.

Faithfulness is steadfast perseverance in loving and trusting God regardless of circumstances. Mary’s unwavering fidelity reveals what complete confidence in Divine Providence looks like.

She teaches us never to abandon Christ, especially during times of darkness, suffering, or uncertainty.

“Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Luke 1:45)

✝MARY MOST DEVOUT

Mary’s entire life was an act of worship. Every prayer, every sacrifice, every duty was offered to God with profound love and reverence.

Devotion is not merely external practices but an interior disposition that seeks continual union with God. Mary’s soul remained recollected even amid ordinary daily life because her heart never ceased loving the Lord.

She teaches us to sanctify our daily duties by performing them with love for God.

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” (Luke 1:46–47)

✝MARY MOST OBEDIENT

When the Angel Gabriel announced God’s plan, Mary freely answered:

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to thy word.”

That single act of obedience changed the course of human history. Throughout her life she continued saying “yes” to God, even when obedience led to poverty, exile, misunderstanding, and finally Calvary.

She teaches us that true freedom is found not in following our own desires but in surrendering completely to God’s holy will.

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38)

✝MARY MOST POOR

Mary embraced the poverty of Bethlehem, the exile into Egypt, and the humble life of Nazareth without complaint. Though Queen of Heaven, she sought no earthly riches or honours.

Evangelical poverty is freedom from attachment to worldly possessions so that the heart may belong entirely to God. Mary’s treasure was always Christ Himself.

She teaches us that lasting happiness is never found in wealth but in complete trust in Divine Providence.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth... but lay up treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19–20)

✝MARY MOST PATIENT

Mary accepted every trial with remarkable peace and perseverance. From Simeon’s prophecy to the sorrow of Calvary, she never murmured against God’s providence.

Patience is love that endures suffering without losing hope. Mary’s steadfast endurance reveals that every cross embraced with Christ becomes a means of sanctification.

She teaches us to carry our crosses faithfully, trusting that God brings good even from suffering.

“By your patience you will gain your souls.” (Luke 21:19)

✝MARY MOST MERCIFUL

As our spiritual Mother, Mary continually intercedes for all who seek her assistance. At Cana she noticed the needs of others before they asked, revealing the compassionate heart God had formed within her.

Mercy is love that stoops to relieve another’s misery. Mary’s maternal charity continually leads sinners to repentance and the faithful closer to her Divine Son.

She teaches us to forgive readily, serve generously, and love without counting the cost.

“His mercy is from generation unto generations upon those who fear Him.” (Luke 1:50)

✝MARY MOST SORROWFUL

No creature ever shared more deeply in Christ’s Passion than His Blessed Mother. Standing beneath the Cross, her Immaculate Heart was mystically pierced as Simeon had foretold.

Yet her sorrow was never despair. United perfectly to the sacrifice of her Son, she accepted every suffering with heroic faith and love.

She teaches us to unite our own sufferings to Christ’s Passion, knowing that the Cross is the road to Resurrection.

“And thy own soul a sword shall pierce.” (Luke 2:35)

✝MARY OUR MODEL IN VIRTUE

The virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary are not unattainable ideals reserved for one extraordinary woman. They reveal what God’s grace can accomplish in a soul that responds with complete faith, humility, and love.

Although none of us possesses Mary’s unique privileges, every Christian is called to imitate her virtues according to his or her state in life. The more we resemble Mary, the more perfectly we become disciples of Jesus Christ.

May her example inspire us to pursue holiness each day, so that we too may joyfully say:

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38)

Mary, Mother of God, Virgin Most Faithful, Mirror of Justice, Seat of Wisdom, Cause of Our Joy, Mother Most Pure, and Mirror of Holiness, pray for us, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

This version is closer in style to traditional Catholic devotional works such as those of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, while remaining firmly rooted in Scripture and the Church’s teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Dear Readers,

Today I want to look at with you the reality of Protestantism is spirtually sterile.

Besides the fact Protestantism is objectively a false creed, yet for all that, even on a subjective level Protestants seem to have no real substantial grasp of the spiritual life and what it is to be a saint in the true sense of the word.

We must keep in mind here the profound importance of this point. The greatest proof of Catholicism is not merely its intellectual arguments—it is its saints. They are a witness to the God at work in real time.

For so is the will of God, that by doing well you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men - 1 Peter 2:15

In other words, one of the most convincing things we can do to lead others to God is the very holiness of our lives. And this is profoundly important, as Christianity was never intended by Christ as some academic society but one of a people transformed by grace that radiates out of their very being !

Every civilization produces heroes according to what it values. If a religion truly possesses the fullness of Christ’s teaching, we should expect it to produce men and women whose lives are transformed by extraordinary holiness. This is precisely what we find throughout Catholic history.

The Catholic Church has produced thousands of saints whose lives are marked by heroic virtue, profound humility, supernatural charity, radical self-denial, mystical union with God, and an astonishing consistency across twenty centuries. Their spirituality is not accidental. It flows from Catholic doctrine.

The Catholic spiritual tradition teaches that salvation is not merely about avoiding Hell or making a profession of faith. It is about becoming holy—being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

Jesus Himself commands:

“Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)

St. Peter echoes the same command: “Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)

The Catholic understanding of holiness therefore involves an entire way of life:

continual conversion

frequent prayer

fasting

penance

self-denial

mortification of sinful passions

growth in virtue

participation in the sacraments

spiritual direction

perseverance until death

This is what Catholics traditionally call the spiritual life.

For two thousand years the Church has developed an immense treasury of wisdom on this journey through figures such as St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Francis de Sales, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Catherine of Siena, the Desert Fathers, and countless others. They explain, often in remarkable detail, how grace transforms the soul from conversion to perfection.

By contrast, many forms of Protestantism have historically emphasized justification by faith alone while rejecting or minimizing many of the traditional disciplines that Catholics see as essential to growth in holiness—such as asceticism, monasticism, religious vows, sacramental confession, and the Church’s developed mystical tradition.

As a result, Protestantism possesses far less of what has historically been called the science of the spiritual life. It has produced many sincere Christians, but comparatively little in the way of a continuous tradition of mystical theology, ascetical theology, and canonized examples of heroic sanctity recognized across the universal Church.

The point here is NOT to say that Protestants cannot be good people or cannot sincerely love Christ. Rather, simply I point out that as a theological system which largely abandons the Church’s historic ascetical and mystical tradition should not be expected to produce the same depth of spiritual formation that has characterized Catholicism throughout history.

Hence, while we don’t doubt that there are many sinscerely devoted Protestants, yet at the heart of it, Protestantism is unable to Produce saints in any real sense of the word . This is because they lack the real means to do so !

The saints are not simply admirable people. They are evidence.

They demonstrate what God’s grace can accomplish when Christians cooperate fully with it. Their lives are living commentaries on the Gospel.

Catholicism doesn’t merely teach us how to get saved; it teaches us how to become saints.

That is why the Church preserves the writings of the saints, canonizes heroic lives, and continually points Christians toward holiness. The Catholic faith is not content with minimal discipleship. Its goal is complete conformity to Christ.

As St. Paul wrote:

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20)

That is the heart of Catholic spirituality—and the saints are its greatest testimony.

The objection to the Real Presence is rarely about Scripture itself. It is usually about subconsciously what people think God can or cannot do.

People often project their own shallowness onto God. This is the heart of the matter.

If we pause and reflect a little we can see that the central question here is not whether Christ called the Eucharist His Body and Blood, as that point clear from scripture.

The central question is whether the eternal Word who sustains all creation can place His glorified humanity sacramentally under the appearances of bread and wine while preserving their visible properties.

If “all things were made through Him” (John 1:3), if “in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17), and if He upholds the universe by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3), then what exactly prevents Him from doing what He repeatedly said He would do?

Is the difficulty biblical, or is it philosophical?

When God became man, did He cease being God? When Christ walked through locked doors after the Resurrection (John 20:19), was His glorified body constrained by ordinary physical limitations? When He ascended bodily into heaven, did His humanity become less real, or more glorified?

If His glorified body is not subject to the limitations of fallen creation, why is it impossible for Him to make that body sacramentally present wherever He wills?

The deeper question is this: if God can sustain every atom of creation in existence at every moment, why can He not sustain the accidents of bread and wine while making present the reality of His glorified Body and Blood?

The Eucharist is not difficult because Scripture is unclear. It is difficult because people instinctively impose limits upon divine omnipotence.

The covenant pattern is also impossible to ignore.

In every major covenant there is priesthood, sacrifice, memorial, and sacred participation.

Under Adam there was priestly stewardship.

Under Noah there was sacrifice.

Under Abraham there was covenant sacrifice and sacred meal.

Under Moses there was priesthood, altar, sacrifice, memorial offerings, and Passover.

Under David there was the restored kingdom with ministerial offices and liturgical worship.

Why would the New Covenant—the final and eternal covenant—contain less than those that preceded it?

Would the fulfillment of all covenants suddenly abolish priesthood, sacrifice, memorial, sacred participation, and altar?

Or would it elevate them into their heavenly reality?

Paul’s language assumes sacrificial participation:

“Behold Israel according to the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?” (1 Corinthians 10:18).

Why appeal to sacrificial communion if the Eucharist is merely symbolic?

Why warn believers that they can become guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:27) if only bread and wine are present?

How can someone profane a symbol and become guilty of Christ’s actual Body and Blood?

Hebrews is even more striking:

“We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle” (Hebrews 13:10).

If the New Covenant has no sacrificial reality, why does it have an altar?

If it has an altar, what is offered there?

If nothing is offered, why call it an altar at all?

Likewise, Paul proclaims:

“Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast” (1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

The first Passover was not completed merely by believing in the lamb.

The lamb had to be consumed.

The blood saved Israel from death, but the covenant meal completed participation in the sacrifice.

If Christ is truly the Lamb of God, why would the New Covenant Passover be reduced to a mental remembrance when the Old Covenant required actual participation?

Did the Israelites eat the Passover lamb?

Is Jesus the Lamb of God?

Did Jesus command, “Take and eat”?

Then why should the fulfillment contain less participation than the type?

The biblical concept of memorial is equally important.

Modern readers hear “remembrance” and think of a mental recollection.

Scripture does not.

The Greek word anamnesis repeatedly appears in sacrificial contexts. In the Old Testament it refers to memorial offerings presented before God. The memorial is not primarily for man to remember God; it is the covenant presentation before God.

This is precisely the language Christ chose.

“Do this in anamnesis of me.”

Why choose sacrificial memorial language at the very moment He institutes the New Covenant?

Why institute it during Passover?

Why connect it to His Body given and Blood poured out?

Why did the earliest Christians immediately understand it sacrificially?

The answer is because Christ was establishing the New Covenant memorial sacrifice foretold by the prophets.

Malachi foresaw a time when:

“From the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering” (Malachi 1:11).

What pure offering is presented among the nations in every place?

Animal sacrifice ended.

The Temple was destroyed.

Yet Christians throughout the world continue to offer the Eucharistic sacrifice.

Coincidence, or fulfillment?

The deepest mystery is not what man sees, but what the Father sees.

Under the Old Covenant, the Bread of the Presence stood perpetually before God.

Under the New Covenant, what stands before the Father?

A symbol?

Or His beloved Son?

If Christ’s glorified humanity eternally intercedes before the Father, is it unreasonable that He makes that same glorified humanity sacramentally present throughout the world?

The Father does not merely see bread.

The Father sees the eternal sacrifice of the Son, once offered on Calvary, now made sacramentally present without being repeated.

One sacrifice.

One High Priest.

One Passover Lamb.

One eternal offering presented across the world.

This fulfills rather than abolishes Leviticus.

The shadows become reality.

The memorial offerings become the true memorial.

The Bread of the Presence becomes the true Presence.

The Passover lamb becomes the Lamb of God.

The earthly sanctuary gives way to heavenly worship.

And the Church does not create this reality.

Christ does.

For nowhere in Scripture does any man claim the authority to build a church.

Christ alone says, “I will build my Church.”

The same Word who created the universe from nothing, who became flesh without ceasing to be God, who rose with a glorified body, who passed through locked doors, and who upholds all things by His power, can certainly make His Body and Blood present under the appearances of bread and wine.

The real question is not whether God can do it.

The real question is whether we believe Him when He says He does !

Dear Readers,

The Problem with the Protestant idea of sola Scriptura - is not only that such a view is not found in scripture, but seperates what God and scripture always intended to keep as one reality, the Church and scripture.

The fact of the matter is that the Church that gave us the bible is the one that Christ founded, that is the Catholic Church !

Let us look at a few basic points - (I intend to cover this topic in greater detail in future posts - stay tunned).

1. The Canon Question Remains Difficult for Protestantism

The fundamental question is: If the Church was reliable enough to recognize the inspired books of Scripture, why is it suddenly unreliable when teaching doctrine?

This is not an easy objection to answer.

The New Testament nowhere provides an inspired table of contents. Christians accepted the 27-book canon because the Church recognized and transmitted it.

The regional councils of Synod of Hippo and Councils of Carthage listed the same 27 New Testament books Catholics use today.

A Protestant can respond that the Church merely “recognized” the canon rather than “created” it, but Catholics generally agree with that distinction. The question then becomes:

By what authority did Christians know that the Church had recognized the canon correctly?

That is where the debate returns to ecclesial authority.

2. Justin Martyr Is Powerful Evidence

Justin Martyr does provide remarkable testimony.

He clearly teaches:

Baptismal regeneration.

A sacrificial understanding of Christian worship.

A Eucharist that is more than symbolic.

Sunday worship rather than Jewish Sabbath observance.

His description of the Eucharist in the First Apology is particularly difficult to reconcile with modern memorialist theology.

A Protestant can argue that Justin does not articulate the later scholastic doctrine of transubstantiation, but it is very difficult to read him as teaching a merely symbolic communion meal.

3. Irenaeus Is Even Stronger

Irenaeus is one of the strongest witnesses because he stood so close to the apostolic age.

His chain is:

John → Polycarp → Irenaeus.

When combating heretics, Irenaeus does not appeal primarily to private Scripture interpretation.

He appeals to:

Apostolic succession.

The authority of churches founded by apostles.

The preservation of tradition.

The special prominence of Rome.

This creates a serious challenge for the idea that Christianity operated on sola scriptura from the beginning.

4. The Early Fathers Look More Catholic Than Evangelical. In fact they would not recognise Protestants as even being Christians by their standards !

When one reads:

Ignatius of Antioch

Justin Martyr

Irenaeus

Cyprian of Carthage

Augustine of Hippo

one finds:

Bishops.

Apostolic succession.

Baptismal regeneration.

Real Presence.

Sacrificial language concerning the Eucharist.

Prayers for the dead.

Veneration of martyrs.

The overall picture is much closer to Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy than to most modern Protestant traditions.

The fact of the matter is that the Christians who preserved Scripture, identified the New Testament canon, defended the Trinity, celebrated the Eucharist as Christ’s Body and Blood, practiced baptismal regeneration, maintained apostolic succession, and honored the authority of bishops are the same Christians from whom Catholicism historically developed. If those Christians were fundamentally wrong about these doctrines, why should anyone trust their judgment concerning the canon of Scripture itself?

That remains one of the most substantial historical challenges Catholicism poses to Protestantism.

It does not by itself prove every Catholic doctrine, but it forces a serious consideration of whether Christianity was originally intended to be a Bible-alone religion or a Church-centered faith that transmitted both Scripture and apostolic tradition.
